Turbo Test Fit

These are some pictures from our first fit of the turbo on my 90 Si in June 2000.  As explained below, there were some problems.

turbo_adapt_mani.jpg (159286 bytes) Here's the setup.  On top is the HF manifold.  Then bolted to that is the custom adaptor we had made.  Then the turbo is bolted to the adaptor.
mani_adapt_1.jpg (92226 bytes) Here's the manifold and adaptor bolted to a spare D16A6 engine in Randy's garage (no the engine is not for sale, sorry).
turbo_mani_driv.jpg (72197 bytes) This shot is taken from the driver's side of my car.  You can see the HF manifold (silver paint) is bolted to the engine and the adaptor and turbo are in place.   It's difficult to see, but the compressor outlet at the very bottom is just about resting on the front cross-member. It's also tucked in behind the opening for the radius arm.  We shortened the adaptor as much as we could while still being able to get a bolt in between the flanges, but it's still too close.
Turbo_mani_pass.jpg (87541 bytes) This shot is taken from the passenger side of the car.  Fortunately, routing the downpipe won't have too many challenges.  The way the turbo sits now, it's just to the side of the area where the stock downpipe comes through.  So it's just a matter of having the pipes come off the turbo, straight down and then back under the engine.  We were worried that we would have to tuck the pipes back under the turbo to line up with the cat, but that looks like it's not the case.
