This website documents the installation of turbochargers
on two Honda CRXs. No, not twin turbos on a CRX, but twin turbo CRXs. One is a red 88 Si
owned by Randy Gazdecki with 220k+ miles
on the original 1.6 SOHC (D16A6) engine. The other is a black 90 Si owned by yours truly, Gary Conners, with 150k miles on the original engine.
We will be using T-25 turbos from DSM Eclipse/Talons and
intercoolers from Mitsubishi Starion/Dodge Conquest ("StarQuest") turbo cars.
The project officially started in August 1999 when we each acquired a T-25
turbo. No part of this installation has been from a turbo kit. The GReddy Civic
turbo kit is very popular to retrofit onto a CRX. But at $1600 sans intercooler, it leaves
your wallet very dry and your engine susceptible to detonation. We decided to put together
an intercooled turbo system for under $1000. Both of our cars are running with the turbo,
although we didn't quite hit our target of $1000. Randy came close, at just under
$1200 (see Parts List).
I abandoned the $1000 target early on, though, and decided I wanted a Zdyne SECU to control my fuel and timing. We've
created a custom adapter plate and found a local shop to manufacture them at a reasonable
price. E-mail me for information on this adapter or click on the links to the left.
As work progresses, I will make updates to this site. To see the latest
progress, go to the Updates
page. Check back often, and please, if you have some advice or parts we might need,
drop us an e-mail!
So, without further ado, I present the twin turbo CRXs!!
Randy's 88 Si and my
90 Si parked at the Elgin, IL CRX meet in June 1998.
My 90 Si as seen in
January 1998. It has since lost the pin stripes and has new black paint.
Under
the hood of My 90 Si. Of course the Lightspeed header will have to go. I may sell it or
put it on my 89 Civic Si H/B.
